Geoff Clough’s Ride out to Weston-Super-Mare

It isn’t a spelling mistake Geoff is leading the ride out. Phil was due to do the honours but cannot ride at the moment.

Phil……..we all hope you get fixed soon.

Geoff Clough is leading the rideout on Sunday 10 May 2015 to Weston super Mare and hopes that you will join him.
We are meeting in the car park of The Sun Inn, Coate, Swindon SN3 6AA from 9.00 to leave at 09:30.
The route goes via Avebury where we pass through the stunning Stone Circle and then we follow the stone avenue towards West Kennett. I’m not entirely sure how the ancient Brits managed to lug all those stones into position! Turning carefully right onto the A4 we pass Silbury Hill, another amazing ancient monument.

We follow the A4 to Calne then take a left towards Melksham. After some interesting roads and avoiding Trowbridge and Frome we will stop at the East Somerset Railway just off the A361 near Shepton Mallet. (Postcode BA4 4QP). It should take around 1 1/2 hours to get there.

The Whistlestop Café serves teas, coffees, cakes, bacon rolls and much more. (For further details see http://www.eastsomersetrailway.com/page.php?pid=57)

After the café stop, we will head for Cheddar riding across the Mendip Hills and down through the breath-taking Gorge and into Cheddar. We then head along the edge of the hills across the A38 and M5 using unclassified roads past Loxton to Bleadon and then into Weston super Mare. The Bike Park is on the front alongside the big wheel and opposite the Premier Inn (Postcode BS23 1TT)

There are plenty of places to eat in Weston super Mare. The long sea front invites a stroll. There are Donkeys on the beach; a pier; there is even a Helicopter Museum (http://helicoptermuseum.co.uk/index.htm)

  1. Following Geoff’s warning on FB about the M4/A34 Chievely junction, here is a link to the Highways Agency for the work: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/M4-Chieveley-Bridge-Refurbishment-Schemes Click on the Journey Impact tab for details.

Briefly, traffic on the M4 itself may be affected by lane restrictions and contraflow with a 50 mph limit, and some parts of the junction may be closed affecting traffic to/from the A34.

Hence you may need to allow more time to get to the Sun Inn if you are using the M4 and/or the A34.
