Our next ‘Meetup’ ride: Turweston Aerodrome

As COVID-19 restrictions ease there is more optimism that there will be greater opportunity to ‘Ride Together’ this summer. Step 3 of the Government’s plan to lift restrictions is set for not before 4th July (subject to reduced infection). So hopefully our 2nd Meetup rideout this year scheduled for July 9th may take place.

Our destination is the Flight Deck Café at Turweston Aerodrome, near Brackley.

The Flight Deck café is located on the 1st floor of this building. Open from 21st May. Food and drink supplied for consumption away from the cafe.

RAF Turweston was opened in 1942 as an airfield to train bomber crews. It had three concrete runways and a single hangar. Wellingtons and Ansons flew there to begin with, then Bostons and Mitchells from 1943. Other types based on the airfield included Mosquitoes and Hurricanes.

You can read about more recent times in this article from Pilot magazine:

Starting off from Starbucks at Peartree Services our direction is north towards Warwickshire before turning east towards Northants and Bucks. Some touches of A and B roads on the way but interspersed with flowing local roads with scattered pretty Oxfordshire villages such as Edge Hill and Cropredy. The glide path over some of these lovely lanes could be best described as rolling.  Be prepared to set suspension gizmos, analogue or digital, to somewhat on the firm side. Approximate mileage is 68 miles and 2 hours duration. We’ll take a leg stretch on the way and plan lunch around 1.00pm
