BMW Club Oxford Section Report for September 2018

R1250 Crowd Sourced Road Test project

We would like to invite members to test (at your leisure) both GS and RT R1250 models with the main focus would be the new engine of course.

We would then report your views under a small number of key headings:-

  • 1250 engine impressions (power/torque/noise)?
  • VVT system in operation (can you detect operation?)
  • R1250 in operation, what’s it like to ride?
  • New exhaust system
  • Slipper clutch
  • Dynamic Hill Start Pro (new modes and operation)
  • Overall impressions: better than the R1200, would you buy one?
  • New technology on the bikes, do it enhance your riding experience?

Send all your comments / suggestions to dave.tomlinson@bmwoxford.comSocial Secretary for the Oxford Section

September 8thRide Out – Charlbury TT – Henk Gouws

A number of club members met at the Peartree services for a 9.30 start to the SNR.

The Charlbury TT is a circular route covering a distance of 105 miles, see the attached map, and is a well documented and spectacular route through the nearby Cotswolds.

A great triangle, totalling 90 miles worth of roads that make up the Charlbury TT crossing open hills, along avenues of trees on the B4437, A361 and B4026 on great straights and demanding corners.  Route details are available on a number of websites, one is shown below:-

http://www.bikersarewelcome.com/charlbury-tt-i1366.html

First stop was the excellent tea and breakfast stop of the Artyard Café, excellent food, a warm welcome and some excellent motorcycles on display!

Winding, traffic free roads and excellent weather, what a wonderful ride out!!

Lunch was served at The Akeman Inn, where some of the party stayed and finished the rest of the route via Waddesdon Manor, others had to leave for various commitments.

A very rewarding Sunday morning on the bikes, well done to Henk for leading such an excellent ride out.

September 15th North Oxford Garage – Sat Nav Event – Steve Moxey

We had a very successful BMW Navigation Workshop at NOG today, the Top Tips booklets proved very popular and the Sat Nav Team did a great job. It was good to see some BMW Club members from other sections at the event. We raised more than £200 pounds for Thames Valley Air Ambulance and recruited some new members (welcome aboard👍).

NOG also has a good day with new bike sales, many thanks to James McMinn of NOG for hosting such a good event.

We will bring some of the BMW Navigator V,VI Top Tips guides to pub socials and Club event so that members can get a copy for a £5 donation to TVAA, a very good cause to support

September 25th– SNR to IWM Duxford Steve Moxey

A very good SNR ride and visit to the IWM Duxford today, after a cool start the weather was wonderful. Many thanks to John Wheeler, Bob Mack, Dave Shanks, Ian Cummins and Mark for your company.

Ian set a bit of a record for the most exclusive SNR ride: from home to White Waltham by motorcycle and then by plane to Duxford!

John received his SNR sticker for his first SNR. There is still time for a few more SNRs before the winter arrives.

September 30thSNR to Twinwood Airfield / Glenn Miller Museum

During WWII, Twinwood Airfield was an RAF training base. During this time Glenn Miller and his orchestra were based in nearby Bedford as a safer alternative to London, Glenn Miller and his band members regularly used RAF Twinwood Airfield.

On December 15th, 1944 Major Glenn Miller boarded a Norseman aircraft outside the control tower and he was never seen again, this sparked a mystery that has fascinated the world ever since.

A large turnout of members turned up for 10am at the Peartree services in Oxford. Using the “buddy system” we made excellent progress in superb riding conditions.

Our thanks go to John Ottaway for the excellent idea and to Dave Shanks for leading the group on a superb riding route!

Oxford Section Sat Nav Project and Survey

The aim of the project is to improve our collective knowledge of how to use our Sat Nav’s and to help members get the best from them.

We have produced an electronic newsletter and have completed a booklet supported by a local dealer of top 100 tips.  The workshops continue with the latest being held on September 15that North Oxford Garage addressing some of the issues identified by our members.
