BMW Club Oxford Section Report for May 2018
20thMarch onwards – Venue Change
Our Pub Social is moving home, please make a note of the new address: Tawny Owl, Taw Hill, North Swindon, Swindon SN25 1WR
6thMay – Haynes Motor Museum Noel Robertson
Feedback on the day: Thank you Noel for a well thought out and very interesting route to the Hayes Motor Museum. You clearly put a lot of time and effort into the planning which was appreciated by all that attended. The route on the way home was led by Geoff Clough who was followed by the six amigos…… Fine scenery and a cracking pace well done!
12thMay – Cotswold Trundle by John Ottaway
They came from near and far (well Brackley/Banbury/Bicester/Reading and Swindon etc anyhow!) A mighty x9 bikes with riders and x1 pillion. A quick brief on the ride and off we went. Gently to start with as we had been forewarned of a police check just up the road. Surely not meant for us in the BMW club ?
An easy start on country roads which just got narrower and with more potholes on a bike …but I hadn’t bargained on Richard doing a ” loose follow ‘ in his Mercedes! He was lost off the back, half way round!
Luckily no traffic was against us, and steady progress was made out past Finstock and the quaint Old Minster Lovell onto the A40 Burford. Before turning off toward Bibury. HERE everyone could unchoke the bikes and exercise a few more horses! Legally of course. To our stop at Chedworth Farm Shop … (currently clear of the ‘gaggles of cyclists’ ) We swooped and dominated the tables as numerous ‘Bottomless Breakfasts’ were ordered to keep the staff busy. We gorged….. Some on Apple pie?
I had to call time here to get a move on . Richard was back with us and we were also joined by an odd couple from Swindon ( ‘Dilly’ and Tracy).
Off we set again …..only some miles later for Ian ( tail end Charlie) to be overtaken by Derek! Pssst …he had got left behind whilst in the loo. I’m thinking of ‘ docking’ Ian one of his pannier stickers ..but hey he’s only got a couple! …ahhhh.
Onto Winchcombe via hill and dale, Guiting Power then Stow and ROHAN.
We were warmly greeted by Rob, Karen and Belinda with cuppa and cake, before the shopping frenzy. Some purchased items ..others perused , until time called .
A great day out. Thanks all. We just need a social now to wear our new stuff.
Also, some of us may have exactly the same gear on…clue here ..I won’t be the thin one !! John
13th– 30thMay – Andalucía Trip – Steve Moxey
The Oxford Section trip to Andalusia went very well, with 14 attendees, including Martin and Gwen who are based near Malaga and hosted the trip. We started at Santander and visited Avila, Trujillo, Aracena, Cadiz, Barbate, Gibraltar, Marbella, Ardales, Lanjaron, Granada, Cazorla, Toldeo and Burgos, and many other places.
We certainly enjoyed some fantastic roads, thanks to Martin’s local knowledge. Thanks to everyone for making this such a good trip, and to Martin and Gwen for organising everything in Spain.
A full tour report will be appearing shortly
12th– 13thMay Weekend Ride – Daffyd Jones
I set off for the west coast of wales to a place called Rhoslefain to camp on effectively the beach after a heavy rain shower we were blessed with a fantastic sunset.
This morning I had the urge to head south and to a favourite site of mine near Weymouth at fleet looking over to Portland.
Sunday saw me set off towards Portland bill then through old Weymouth town and along the front to Presto then from there down to Lulworth.
Up to the barracks hook a left towards Lulworth castle then up on to the range road towards Tynham village which to my surprise was open so took a bumble down to the village had a wonder round.
Back on the bike heading for just the other side of Corfe castle found a lovely campsite how ever after a ride on the train and a walk back to the site the wind had picked up, so I thought well everything has to be packed back on the bike to move it round the site to find a less windy part, so I decided if the bike is packed let’s just head home a bit earlier than planned but overall a good weekend away.
27thMay – Bike Shed Chris Bond
230+ bikes, countless of the best builders and brands, music, entertainment and plenty of food and drink it’s the best show yet!
Oxford Section Sat Nav Project and Survey
Earlier in the year we announced the start of the Oxford Section Sat Nav Project between the Oxford Section and North Oxford Garage. The aim of the project is to improve our collective knowledge of how to use our Sat Nav’s and to help members get the best from them.
We have produced an electronic newsletter, and now we are working on a booklet supported by a local dealer of top 100 tips. The first of a number of workshops is organised for January addressing some of the issues identified by our members.
Drop me a line if you would like an insight into the results
