New 2014 R1200RT Re-call – Dynamic Package ESA problem – DO NOT RIDE!

I received a phone call from NOG at 3pm today. There has been a problem identified with the ESA and an immediate DO NOT RIDE from BMW!
Information is limited at the moment but it is to do with the rear plunger rod assembly.
I have been told to arrange a recovery through Mondial (BMW Help Line) and have delivered to NOG.
Anyone with the new 2014 LC R1200RT with ESA should be receiving a phone call from their dealer.

  1. OK One of us had better ask what we are all thinking….
“what was Steve Wicks riding when he had his fatal accident?”
Perhaps his bike needs to be inspected for possible cause?

  2. Hello Andy.
Did they what might happen if you carried on riding and had some sort of failur?

  3. I wouldn’t like to speculate, but I can’t say it hadn’t crossed my mind. However, at the moment we don’t know exactly what the problem is or indeed what the consequences of a failure would or might be.
Simon at NOG said that all they had was the recall notice, the stop riding immediately and a brief description of the problem i.e. rear plunger rod assembly. They don’t even know what the fix is yet.
It should all become clearer over the next few days.

  4. “stop riding immediately”
This is pretty strong stuff, you don’t see this kind of instruction often from BMW I would suggest…

  5. Copy of the official announcement from BMW:

BMW Motorrad provides owners of the model BMW R 1200 RT with precautionary information concerning a potential defect in the rear spring strut.

Munich. As of today, BMW Motorrad is notifying all owners of the current R 1200 RT, model year 2014, fitted with the Dynamic ESA option that there is a potential defect in the rear spring strut. At the present time it cannot be ruled out that the piston rod of the rear spring strut in connection with the Dynamic ESA option could potentially break. For this reason, customers are requested not to ride their motorcycle until further notice. This is a precautionary measure which BMW Motorrad is taking in the interests of customer safety based on a supplier report. To date there have been no injuries related to this issue. Approximately 8,000 vehicles are affected by this measure worldwide.

A technical campaign is in preparation to replace the part in question. BMW Motorrad regrets any inconvenience caused to customers affected by this precautionary measure.

  6. Hello all,
I have spoken to the north oxford garage and dad was riding this type of bike with this dynamic package ESA. The police have been in to speak to the garage about it and will be checking to make sure this was not the cause of the crash. The police should be getting back to be shortly (although they have had to rush off to another crash). Although it is unlikely to have anything to do with dad’s crash, when I saw this I thought it was worth letting the police know so they could investigate and put our minds at rest.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts of dad when you heard about this.
    Hope you are all well.
    Best wishes
    Katie Wicks
