Many of us will be using the popular CTEK battery charger to trickle charge our bikes in the garage. These chargers provide years of excellent service and will also charge high current batteries such as the Odyssey range. For more information on CTEK chargers see this website. Unfortunately my CTEK XS 7000 recently developed a fault where the mode change switch stopped working and I was stuck in AGM mode. I thought this might be an electronic problem but was relieved to discover that the issue is mechanical and might be solved by lubrication!
There are various videos on the internet describing the procedure and it is quite easy. Just remove the four rear screws and most importantly move the cable grommets out of their holders – this will give you enough room to then carefully rotate the circuit board to get at the mode microswitch.
The microswitch (marked by a yellow box) does look to be quite a good construction but dirt must get in over the year so just spray it with electric contact cleaner I used the WD-40 variant. Be CAREFUL not to damage the mode switch on the cover which is a very thin membrane that normally rests on the microswitch!
After cleaning the CTEK XS 7000 is now working normally and I can select the other modes. This procedure should work for all the other CTEK battery chargers with the same mode switch.
